Another One Bites the Dust: No More Hot Mess at The Stud

Over the weekend a source familiar with The Stud's booking situation told me that Gus Presents will no longer be presenting Hot Mess at The Stud. According my source, Gus wanted to bring in his own bar staff, and to take a bigger percentage of the bar income, to which The Stud said no.

With the loss of Trannyshack and Hot Mess, as well as Lucky Pierre and Heat/Loose, and only David Harness' Manifesto to support Friday nights, one wonders what will become of The Stud in the days ahead. It looks to me like they really need to find another strong night for Saturdays to keep things afloat, though I have no idea how well Planet Big and some of the other monthlies are doing there.

Event Review: Lucky Pierre at The Stud

After two extremely busy weekends, the boyfriend and I decided to take it easy this past weekend and do something different, like go to a movie on Saturday night (The Golden Compass, mainly because the boyfriend wanted to see the talking polar bears). After the movie we did stop into Drunk and Horny for a sociable drink with Big Red, Sparky, and Gary, but our real going-out experience for the weekend was Lucky Pierre on Friday night where we found a very fun dancefloor and the boyfriend got a little adventurous playing strip poker.

It's always satisfying to see a club night that you like grow and develop; we first checked into the Lucky Pierre scene back in August on the occasion of their six month anniversary, and in the past four months it feels like the scene has definitely grown. DJ6 and Donimo continue to spin crowd-pleasing electro and indietronica (including original remixes, something you almost never hear at other clubs), and this seems to be bringing in not only a diverse and pretty cute crowd of alternaboys, but also a fair number of sexually diverse clubbers who simply seem to be looking for a good time on a Friday night.

In addition to a fun dancefloor, Lucky Pierre also offers some of the "playful" hanky-panky for which SoMa bars in general, and The Stud in particular, have been infamous for over the years. This time the boyfriend got in on a round of Artemis Chase's strip poker, and while I won't say just how far the boys stripped - I think there are some laws about that, or something - I certainly got to see a loin-stirring variety of physical proportions and attributes. It's even better when you realize that most of these guys have never played a hand of five card stud in their lives, leaving it up to Artemis to determine the winners and losers of each hand. The boyfriend didn't last very long through the poker playing, but he was extremely popular afterwards.

Lucky Pierre shows signs of only getting better with age, and it's certainly your best bet for a $5 cover on a first Friday. Keep in mind that these are also the same guys who bring you Heat on third Fridays at The Stud, and that DJ6 and friends are behind Bender on second Fridays at The Transfer. There, something to do every Friday of the month leading up to Fuck Shit, Let's Dance at Deco.

The End of Trannyshack!

Wow, following upon the heels of the most recent Miss Trannyshack pageant, Heklina announces the end of Trannyshack as a weekly party! One immediate response from a passerby informed of the news was "Thank God!" The mind boggles at how this will change the dynamic of the San Francisco gay club scene - will Charlie Horse now become the dominant drag destination? Will parties now have fewer drag divas living off their Miss Trannyshack fame? Stay tuned and find out!

The Lame-O Weekend

Grey skies, damp fog, chilly air, sniffles - all the elements came together this weekend to finally kick my hibernating instinct into gear. As the days grow shorter so too does my attention to the outside world, especially now that the boyfriend and I have the comfy apartment with the fireplace and enough room to entertain a few friends of our own with low-cost televisual entertainments.

We did make it out on Friday night to a couple birthday parties (again, what's with all the Scorpios around here?), one for Comfort and Joy impressario Kitten Calfee, the other for DJ Donimo at Heat. Kitten's party was jam-packed with burners, trannies, and alternaqueers, and after noticing that a significant percentage of the guys (and a few of the women) were sporting mohawks, I almost decided that I need to find myself a less-common coif. I spotted Juanita Fajita on her way to Raya Light's step-down party (where Juanita's performance included the consuption of a "beef liver" fashioned out of raspberry and blueberry jello) and watched a strip-tease in the living room, but the boyfriend and I left before everyone's clothes started coming off.

Heat was again a fun night of dancing, though it would have been nice to have had a few more people on the dancefloor with us. There were some great interpretations of 80s New York Studio 54 style, and performances of Grace Jones and Donna Summer that were nicely integrated into the DJ sets themselves. I spotted a photographer for a club glossy in the crowd and he certainly got some good snaps for the "seen out and about" section. His presence made me think about how few events there are in SF, a place filled with people who are into costumes and fine millinery, where there's really incentive to put on your fine flashy threads and strut around. I hope more people will get into Heat as a fun fashion scene at the December installment -it's even got me re-considering what I should do about my clubbing wardrobe.

And then, after Friday, we just pooped out. I heard that the Miss Trannyshack pageant at the Gift Center on Saturday night was actually kind of a bore - it got started almost an a hour and a half late and at 1.30 the final act had just performed. As my source told me, it was bunch of performances that had two elements out of five right - as we later decided, once you take the "shack" out of "trannyshack," it begins to lose its edge and just becomes another San Francisco institution with big wigs, like Beach Blanket Babylon. My big disappointment, though, was not making it to French Kiss at Pink on Sunday evening to hear JD Samson of Le Tigre - I had really been looking forward to a Sunday evening of drinks and electro, but the boyfriend and I spent the whole afternoon with our friend J shooting corny Christmas pix to send to our families, and by the time we had taken him out to dinner for his help, and settled down to the chores we needed to get done, I found it much more attractive to finish up a mission in Medal of Honor: Airborne and go to bed with some Nyquil for my cold than to rouse up the energy to go out. And that's how lame *I* was this weekend; how about you?

Event Review: Heat at The Stud

Friday evening was looking grim for an opening night, what with the rain and the cold and the general pre-Halloween malaise. But the party gods decided to smile upon our fair city, so the skies cleared and Heat caught fire with a fun crowd that was there to show some style, dance, and even get a little flirty.

The night was built around the concept of re-inventing Warhol's factory and to that end most of the dance area walls and pillers were covered in aluminimum foil, with the go-go stands wrapped to resemble the famed Brillo pad boxes. There were reproduction screenprints of Liz and Marilyn, and original footage of the Bay Bridge in the style of "Empire," along with long, static shots of a couple languidly playing cards, reading, and making peanut butter sandwiches. The flyer promised free admission to anyone who came as Andy or in Factory superstar drag, and while I did see a couple platinum wigs, and Artemis Chase as Candy Darling, the crowd seemed to go for its own idiosyncratic SoMa style, though I've not seen so much leopard print in one place in ages. I especially appreciated the punk go-go boy (I think he might be the last queer punk in the Castro) with the aluminum foil briefs. While it might not have been all the glam of the Factory (we really needed Lou Reed shooting up in the corner for that), there was a special vibe that made me think this night could turn into an interesting cultural nexus.

It took until about 11.30 for the dance floor to take off, but DJ6 and Donimo laid down some groovy electro, and some interesting remixes (when was the last time you heard "Heart-Shaped Box" at 130 bpm) that kept the boyfriend and I going until last call. It's been a while since I have seen a dancefloor populated by more than one or two tweeky twirlers, and a while since I felt moved to really dance, but these guys know how to handle a groove and get the crowd moving. I even had one guy pull me out onto the dancefloor while I was being a wallflower off to the side. I can't remember the last time that happened!

On our walk home I thought about how interesting it was to build a party around the idea of The Factory; after all, when we think of that time and place, we think not only of a certain iconic glamour, but also of the creativity that came together there. Earlier in the week I had a conversation with my friend Kitten, the impressario behind the Comfort and Joy camp, about his interest in building out more of an alternative queer community, one that focuses on creativity as much as it does on sex and partying. Heat feels like its after that same thing, marking out a monthly space to experiment with the club experience, and giving those who come an opportunity to engage in creative expression of their own. I like Lucky Pierre, done by the same crew, because they are trying to create an atmosphere of fun sexyness, rather than the grimly determined sexual drive that seems to dominate almost every other gay club night; with Heat, I see a night that has the potential to become the San Francisco version of The Misshapes (though with considerably better music and DJs) because it's about fun, style, and glamour, something that has been sorely, sorely missing in the San Francisco gay club scene. So, get ready kids, hit the thrift stores, dig out your eyeliner, and come down to next month's installment of Heat; it's the place to create what you want to be.

Folsom Street Parties?

Okay, so it's generally indicative of how well the gay community relates to the rest of San Francisco party culture (or maybe it's the other way around) that LoveFest and Folsom Street Fair wind up on the same weekend. And while my Outlook calendar is so brimming with LoveFest parties for next weekend (mainly on Friday, I guess nobody wants to compete against Seismic at Mighty or the huge hullabaloos at 1015 and the Bill Graham), I've got nothing, nothing for Folsom Street Fair parties. Oh yeah, I know about Real Bad at (urgh) 1015 ($60 - $85, but at least the proceeds benefit LYRIC), and Magnitude ($75 retail, $90 at the door, thank you very much), the Folsom Eve Ball at the Porn Palace (sorry, an event that only has images of women just doesn't appeal to me very much), and Juanita More's Playboy event The Stud (which at least has Safety Scissors as a DJ going for it), but these are all the "official" events - what I want to know is, are there any "underground" parties going on? Any parties with music besides tribal diva house (now that's butch) or stereotypical industrial sounds (how many times will NIN be played this weekend)? Any parties that aren't in megaclubs or mega expensive? C'mon, I haven't had a chance to wear my latex doggie gear out in a really long time, gimme a clue about where I can get my fetish on.

Event Review: Lucky Pierre at The Stud

Friday night the boyfriend and I made it out to The Stud for the sixth monthly installment of Lucky Pierre, and despite my knees being blown out from a solid day of moving, toting, and arranging, the scene re-invigorated me to such a degree that I not only danced, but was able to forget for a while about transferring utilities, mollifying past and potential landlords, and pondering existential issues surrounding co-habitation with a boyfriend for the third time in my life.

We arrived around eleven and the crowd was already pretty lively; a round of strip poker was going on in the side room, in the back curtained room there were casting couch auditions for Factory Video, and Coco Chanel was everywhere doing her best to convince attendees to follow her into one room or the other. That Coco actually knew how to be a hostess, instead of just having her name under "Hosted By" on the flyer, was one of the things I enjoyed best about this night; twice she came over and talked to me, once to try and coax me onto the casting couch, the second time she handed me a dollar and told me to tip one of the dancers on stage and "smile pretty" for the cameras (more on that in a minute). As her partner in Pierre, Dan, told me, the goal of Lucky Pierre is to have a "playful sexuality," and in that regard Coco is the ideal hostess, helping the guests to feel comfortable and inspiring all sorts of naughty behavior. There are plenty of opportunities for interaction beyond the usual club standing and posing, whether it's tipping go-go boys, playing a couple hands of strip poker, or just getting out onto the dancefloor and sidling up to a cutie.

The crowd reminded me of the boys who would show up for Jeff and Gary's Reform Skool parties; more on the alterna side, more of what I've come think of as SoMa boys, though there were a few older SoMa queens around as well. We were accompanied by our friends Matt and Alex, the latter a habitue of The Lone Star and Bearacuda who was of the opinion "there are a lot of cute guys here," while I spotted a ginger-haired lad who works out at my gym and who I will now definitely be watching more closely as he uses the Roman chair. It was overall the sort of crowd that is into witty and artistic t-shirts, but who will probably take them off with very little prompting.

DJs for the night were Donimo (Substance) and DJ Six (Now Hear This) spinning indie electronica and electro. and over two hours we heard tracks from the likes of MIA, Depeche Mode, Justice, and New Young Pony Club, as well as the classic homodisco track, "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record Baby)" from Dead or Alive. The music had enough motive force to get me out onto the dancefloor after thinking I wouldn't even make it out for the evening, which is really all that needs to be said.

Lucky Pierre is definitely a scene; there are lots of camera flashes throughout the evening, and all it takes is one look at their myspace page to see that winding up in a photo or video clip is one of the highlights of the evening. Ordinarily this would bother me, but in this case I think it goes hand-in-crotch with the spirit of the evening; this is a party where anyone who shows up is a star and part of the action, rather than just certain scene kids. Next month's Lucky Pierre is Hair Do's (or Don'ts), and I'll definitely be spiking up the mohawk for it - after all, I want to look good for my close-up.

Upcoming: Lucky Pierre at The Stud

This Friday, April 6, is first Friday, so that means Lucky Pierre at The Stud. This is the second outing for host Coco Chanel (Miss Trannyshack 2005) and resident DJ Donimo, and has the promise of some fun from guest DJ Barbeau of the LA electro band Dirty Sanchez - check out their video for "Really Rich Italian Satanist" on the Lucky Pierre myspace page. Nice go-go boy pix there too.

Throw Down at Planet Big!

Richard, stalwart door guy for Drunk and Horny and various other club nights around town, reported on Saturday night that he got busted for assault last weekend at The Stud's Planet Big after a round of unwarrented belly-bumping caused a beer bottle to fly across the room, resulting in an injury, a pissed-off boyfriend, and a nasty sucker punch.

As Richard told the story, he was at Planet Big to check out the space for a possible job as door guy there. Richard is a large guy himself, and though he's not into the bear crowd, they were waaaay into him, expressing their affection through aggressive belly-bumping. As Richard was getting it from all around, the beer bottle he was holding flew out of his hand and impacted on the head of a skinny guy on the dancefloor, drawing blood. The large boyfriend decided to throw down right there with Richard, but, being the calm and cool guy that he is, Richard invited him to go outside where it was quiet and talk the matter over. At the door there was a bit more of a fracas, with Richard putting the big boyfriend in an arm lock and trying to drag him outside the club, only to get sucker-punched by someone from behind. At this point Richard decided to cut his losses and just leave, but instead of going home, he decided to make the rounds of a couple other bars. Unfortunately, as he was leaving one, a police cruiser came by with the injured guy in it, who pointed out Richard as the guy who had clocked him with a beer bottle. Richard wound up spending the night in lock-up, but the charges against him will likely be dismissed.

Two lessons here kids: one, keep away from those big bellys if you're not ready to bump back (esp. on International Bear Rendezvous weekend, when all those bears are boiling with testosterone), and two, after you've been in a throw-down, just go the hell home and hide out for a while.
